The rehearsal phrases decoded, from letter D to the Vi-de cut to sit on it. Two dozen part markings in plain English, a tempo to stringendo, tenuto to morendo, tutti to col legno. And the tempo words as numbers: Grave around 25 to 45 beats per minute, Allegro at 120 to 156, Prestissimo above 200, with the honest note that the ranges overlap because composers, editions and conductors disagree, and the conductor’s tempo is the tempo.
